NSW: Oppn doesn't support taking obese kids from parents
The New South Wales opposition says childhood obesity is a complex issue and can't
be solved by breaking up families.
Opposition community services spokeswoman PRUE GOWARD says it's a child protection
issue and health and education authorities should coordinate programs to help obese children.
But she says taking children from their parents isn't the solution.
Ms GOWARD's comments come after Dr SHIRLEY ALEXANDER from The Children's Hospital at
Westmead in Sydney said parents should have their children seized if they fail to address
diet problems.

VIC:Sophisticated drug lab in Melbourne suburb
MELBOURNE, Aug 30 AAP - A sophisticated drug lab found in suburban Melbourne was at
risk of exploding, police say.
Four men have been arrested as part of Operation Matador, a 10-month investigation
into the manufacture and trafficking of ecstasy.
Drug Taskforce Detective Acting Inspector Dale Flynn said a sophisticated clandestine
laboratory found in Maribyrnong was in an extremely volatile state.
"We consider the lab uncovered in Bloomfield Avenue to be extremely dangerous to the
public," Acting Inspector Flynn said in a statement.
"We are concerned about the chemicals involved which could potentially be explosive
with some considered carcinogenic.
"To be able to successfully dismantle a laboratory of this nature following a 10-month
long investigation is very pleasing; the potential for something to have gone wrong was
very real."
Police searched five homes and one business property in Maribyrnong, Ascot Vale, Narre
Warren, Maidstone and Altona on Tuesday morning.
The four arrested men - a 22-year-old from Maribyrnong, a 26-year-old from Maidstone,
a 20-year-old from Altona and 20-year-old from Narre Warren - were assisting police with
their inquiries, the statement said.

Qld: RACQ to announce plans to stop Queensland Motorways sale
The RACQ is launching a campaign to stop the sale of Queensland Motorways.
Spokesman GARY FITES says the privatisation of the state-owned entity will condemn
motorists to paying tolls on the Gateway and Logan motorways for the next 50 years.
He says the only rationale for it is a once-off cash injection of three to five billion
dollars .. to get the Queensland Motorways debt off the government's books.
He says a private operator would be motivated by profit and maximising returns to shareholders
.. not traffic movement around Brisbane .. and it's mums and dads and small business operators
who'll pay.

NSW: Higher price of cocaine due to good policing: Scipione
NSW Police Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE says the relatively high price of cocaine in
Australia is a result of good policing.
Newspaper reports suggest Australia's now one of the most lucrative markets in the
world for the illicit drug.
Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports that cocaine seizures in Australia have grown 20 per
cent since 2003.
One kilogram of the drug's worth 190 thousand dollars here compared to 35 thousand
in the US .. making Australia the most lucrative market in the world.
Mr SCIPIONE says seizures by state and federal police are causing the price to rise.

Qld: Lobbyists barred from government positions
(Eds: Takes in ke Fundraiser)
By Jessica Marszalek
BRISBANE, Aug 5 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has defended lobbyist links in
her own office as she brought in new rules preventing lobbyists from holding government
positions.
Ms Bligh announced on Wednesday that all lobbyists would be banned from all government-appointed
boards and positions in another move to keep lobbyists at a distance from government.
"I have asked my director-general to conduct an exhaustive search of the membership
of all government boards and associated bodies to identify any individuals who are also
registered as lobbyists on the lobbyist register in this state," she told parliament.
"Anyone who receives a tick in both boxes will receive a letter from my director-general
advising them that they have one month to choose between these two roles."
Former politicians Steve Bredhauer, Terry Mackenroth, Darryl Briskey, Anthony Mooney,
Con Sciacca and Jim Soorley would be among those to receive the letters, she said.
"I have no reason to believe that any of these people have in any way acted inappropriately.
Indeed, I have observed them serving the people well in these roles," she said.
"But given the growing community concern about the relationship between lobbyists and
politics in Queensland, I believe that we must ensure they are kept at arm's length from
the decision-making process."
The opposition has used parliament to highlight the lobbying backgrounds of government
staff, pointing to two in the premier's office who formerly worked at lobbying company
Enhance Group.
Another staffer in the office of Planning Minister Stirling Hinchliffe worked as a
lobbyist for CPR Communications.
"Obviously we're pointing out that there's a murky connection between big business,
lobbyists and this government and this needs to be clarified," Opposition Leader John-Paul
Langbroek told reporters.
But Ms Bligh said there were no problems with the staffers' work histories.
"A number of my staff have had many different jobs before coming into my office," she
told reporters.
"Some of them have worked in the public sector and some of them have worked in lobbying
organisations."
The links did not affect them conducting their responsibilities with the utmost integrity,
she said.
Ms Bligh said a green paper would be released "very soon" to look at further changes
that might be made to increase government transparency. This follows bans on success fees
and on MPs and ministers attending political fundraisers with business.
Earlier Ms Bligh released a list of business leaders who have paid to dine with her
at Labor-organised functions.
The guest list of almost 90 businesses and individuals who paid to attend lunches and
dinners from July 2008 to June 2009 includes prominent developers Springfield Land Corporation,
Metroplex and Delfin Lend Lease.
Liberal National Party (LNP) president Bruce McIver promised to release a list of businesses
that paid to attend their state conference and a $20,000-a-head fundraising event.
"We will declare all donations to our party in the appropriate manner as per the law
as we always have done and I'll make sure that that standard continues," Mr McIver told
reporters.
The party was considering its position on fundraising dinners, he said.

Qld: PM hears calls for action on indigenous issues at COAG
BRISBANE, Dec 14 AAP - Indigenous affairs could be included in discussions between
federal and state leaders next week, in light of a national outcry over the gang rape
of a 10-year-old girl in far north Queensland.
Nine male offenders escaped jail time for the 2006 offence at Aurukun, prompting Premier
Anna Bligh to order a review of sexual assault cases in Cape York over the past two years.
Yesterday, Ms Bligh called for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting
in Melbourne next week to include talks on the services available in indigenous communities.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said there was room for the issue on the agenda, "depending
on the views of other governments".
"The question is what productive strategies can be embraced by the future, but I have
an open mind on that, so long as we have a productive and constructive way forward," he
said.
Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has discussed the Aurukun case with
Ms Bligh this week, and has indicated she will travel to Queensland for further talks.
There are calls for the federal government's indigenous intervention in the Northern
Territory to be expanded into Queensland, a move Ms Macklin hasn't ruled out.
However, Mr Rudd would not commit to the proposal yesterday, preferring to wait for
a 12-month review of the intervention.

School principal, feuding students begin dialogue ; 'Carnival Killers' and suspended students meet to address concerns about harassment and bullying.

SKOWHEGAN --
Parents remained uneasy Wednesday as school administrators tried to defuse conflicts between two groups of students at Skowhegan Area High School.
Principal Richard Wilson and other officials met Wednesday with members of two rival student factions.
The meeting followed a sit-in at the school last Thursday that resulted in the suspension of about 30 students the next day. The suspended students said they had been protesting ongoing harassment and intimidation by a group of students who call themselves "The Carnival Killers." During their suspension, the students protested outside the school.
Wilson said the student protesters, who returned to school Wednesday, provided a list of changes they want, such as enforcement of the student dress code; regulation of the size of student groups that can congregate, and elimination of the name "Carnival Killers."
"They presented some very legitimate points," Wilson said. "That is not the end of it. That's just the start of a conversation."
Administrators and police say rumors fueled fears. Parents uncovered Internet chat-room conversations about retaliation that mentioned guns and knives.
Acting Police Chief Rick Bonneau said most of those blogs, e- mails and chat-room conversations have been traced to their origins and are baseless.
Wilson also said many rumors were not true. A story about students throwing doughnuts at teachers was false, he said. Students actually threw doughnut holes, and they threw them at one another.
Wilson also said one confrontation between students occurred because he had unwittingly selected a place for the "Carnival" students to congregate that previously had been designated for juniors.
Parents and grandparents continue to worry.
Susan Bradford, waiting outside the school Wednesday afternoon, said the conflict has made her granddaughter fearful of going to school. "She's very nervous. She got hit and knocked to the ground with a backpack," Bradford said.
Maili Bailey, whose son was a protester, said the mass suspension was "brutish. I thought it was heavy-handed."
She said last Thursday's sit-in was a peaceful protest aimed at the real problems of harassment and bullying. "You don't just gloss over it," she said.
The conflict spilled over into the Skowhegan Recreation Center on Monday, when two groups of teenagers said they met to discuss the issues. Police confiscated a sword and daggers from a car in which teenagers had arrived. Officials later learned that many of the youths involved in that conflict do not attend Skowhegan Area High School.
Junior Julian Oakes, who was one of the suspended protesters, said he thinks Wednesday's meeting started the process of resolving long-standing harassment and bullying concerns.
Sage McGowan, a 15-year-old freshman who said he is among the people labeled as "Carnival Killers," said, "It's been blown out of proportion."

Actiontec Electronics announced a new generation of VoSKY Exchange, a family of PBX-to-Skype gateways.
With the products, businesses can use standard desktop phones to make and receive free and low-cost long-distance and international calls over Skype, an Internet communication offering.
Actiontec said the new 9140/9180 series adds remote access to Exchange-based Skype lines for users who are out of the office, other convenience features, and a new PBX connectivity strategy that reduces costs.
VoSKY Exchange is a rack-mountable, PBX voice gateway that adds up to eight outgoing Skype lines to the office PBX without changes to existing PBX or phone equipment. Multiple Exchange boxes can be set up in company offices in different locations worldwide to enable free calls between colleagues. Calls to other Skype users are free, while SkypeOut calls to landline or mobile phones are charged at very low rates. The system eliminates the need to use a PC and headset to make Skype calls, has a low one-time cost, and can pay for itself in a few months, the company noted. Skype itself has no signup or monthly access fees.
"These latest upgrades continue our efforts to equip businesses with the tools they need to take full advantage of the Skype products without changing their existing phone infrastructure," said David Tang, Actiontec's Director of VoIP Product Development. "The first generation of VoSKY Exchange solved the problem of Skype- enabling the PBX, the second added a rackmountable form factor and extensive reporting capabilities, and our new convenience and connectivity features make it even easier to integrate Skype into the enterprise in order to reap the cost savings of Internet communications."

Fed: Nowra remembers their four crewman
By Graeme Webber
NOWRA, April 8 AAP - Personnel from the naval base that was home to four of nine crew
who died in a helicopter crash in Indonesia have mourned the men as "irreplaceable".
The service at HMAS Albatross at Nowra came as Prime Minister John Howard said all
bona-fide partners of the defence personnel killed in last Saturday's crash, while delivering
aid to earthquake victims, would receive compensation.
He also flagged a review of the humanitarian service medal system as a political debate
raged about whether the nine Navy and RAAF personnel should receive posthumous medals.
With tears in the eyes of many, grief and shared memories marked the tributes of naval
officers and colleagues for the the four, Lieutenant Matthew Goodall, Lieutenant Paul
Kimlin, Lieutenant Jonathan King and Leading Seaman Scott Bennet, who were aboard the
Sea King as it crashed.
"As the commanding officer of the squadron, I feel the loss of four of my men deeply,"
Commander James Tobin, the commanding officer of 817 Squadron told the gathering at HMAS
Albatross at Nowra on the NSW south coast.
"I sent a team away and four of them will not be returning and I feel this very hard."
Chief of Navy Vice-Admiral Chris Ritchie told the mourners, including the entire 1,500
strong Nowra naval community, the four crewman had carried out their duties in a spirit
of service and sacrifice to help and protect others.
"They are irreplaceable and they will always be remembered by their shipmates, by the
navy, by the airforce and by the nation," Vice-Admiral Ritchie said.
Colleagues gave stirring eulogies for each, highlighting their professional work ethic,
mateship and good humour.
Prayers and tributes were offered by defence officials and colleagues as the 1,500-strong
navy community shared their grief with the wider community.
Mr Howard meantime said although he believed compensation payments were now adequate,
the government would look at the system if there were complaints following the Sea King
disaster.
"The Act - as I have been advised - if you're living in a bona-fide domestic relationship,
whether married or not, you get the entitlement, so I don't think that is an issue," Mr
Howard told Melbourne radio station 3AW.
He would also review the humanitarian service medal system, but said he would not enter
the debate and interfere with the military medal system - a system steeped in history
and tradition.

WhatAEs in a name?
Prince Harry's in trouble for using racial slang. Eve Dugdale asks if it's really such a big deal We've all got nicknames for our friends and loved ones. Names we may not use in public or to address anyone who isn't close to us. Sometimes these names, which often focus on our looks or personality, could be taken as offensive if overheard by somebody outside our social circle. But when these names focus on someone's race or religion, how acceptable is it to use them full stop? England's Prince Harry recently came under fire for using a 'racist' name for a member of his army platoon. He has since issued an apology after a British newspaper published a video diary in which he calls one of his colleagues a 'Paki'. The British Army says it's taking the allegations 'very seriously', the British Prime Minister has slammed the incident as 'unacceptable', and the Muslim group, the Ramadhan Foundation, has called the young Prince a 'thug'. But the Prince has said he used the term about a friend, a highly popular member of his platoon, and without malice. So is it offensive to use words with racist connotations amongst your own friends? Kais Akram, 22, is a Dubai university student from Pakistan. He says many young people he knows use nicknames for each other that would be deemed offensive outside their friendship group. "I've got black and Chinese friends and even some white friends who all call me 'Paki'. "If it's a friend, it's all right, I would say something similar to them. If it's someone I didn't know or someone I knew was trying to insult me then that's different, and I would take it as offensive." Marco Blankenburgh is the founder of KnowledgeWorkx, a company that helps different nationalities learn how to adjust to and respect their new country and cultures. He has worked in the Arab world for 16 years and says what happened may have been an innocent dialogue between friends who address each other in this way all the time. He says it's been spun into a political issue. "People say stuff like that all the time. If you take this in the friends context and you observe the dynamics and camaraderie, it probably wasn't an issue, but when it is taken out of context, it then becomes an issue," he says. "It's not about speaking the right words, it's about triggering the right response. So it's my responsibility, as a speaker, to try and think, would saying it this way trigger the right response with that person? As opposed to it's only my responsibility to speak the right words." Ronaldo Policarpio, 27 is a bank worker from the Phillipines. He says the issue is about intent. "It depends on the person who says it and how they deliver the word. You will know from your heart if they're saying it to be offensive," he says. "It's not that the words are bad words, it's how they're delivered. If you know the person who is saying it has respect for you, then it's okay." But Alaa Khier, 25, a web designer from Syria says racist names are hurtful in any context. "I might accept it within my friend group considering our relationship, but I would find it a bit hard if it came from anybody else. "However, in both cases nobody likes to be called such words," he says. "As an Arab, disrespectful words are totally unacceptable for most, but for me the reaction might be different - I would just respect their opinion though it might hurt." There's an argument that the military environment is different to others and soldiers often use insulting or crude names for each other. Could it be that the prince has a nickname himself connected to his royal heritage or ginger hair, and it's just an accepted part of army life? Marco adds: "I was in the military and I know what people say to each other there. If any of it ever ended up in the newspaper you would have outrage. But at that time and in that context, it wasn't mean or degrading. "One thing I'm not in favour of is political correctness for the sake of it, because that just deadens communication. "Political correctness tries to dictate how people relate to one another. That is a dead-end road and people become so careful in communicating that they don't say things that should actually be said."
