NSW: Cardinal Clancy announces intention to resign = 2

"I'm required by canon law to hand in my resignation when I reach the age of 75 which I
reached a few days ago and I've handed in the resignation," Cardinal Clancy told Sky News.

"From now on it's up to the Pope when he accepts it and he won't accept it until they find
a successor and who knows when that might be.

"So in the meantime I continue and am happy to do so, but happy too to step aside when the
time comes."

A spokeswoman from the Catholic Church later told AAP it could be the year 2000 before a
replacement for the cardinal was appointed.

However, she said he would be asked to stay on as an administrator and would retain the
right to vote in the Sacred College of Cardinals until the age of 80.

Cardinal Clancy was became a priest in 1949 and was ordained as bishop in 1974.

He became the Archbishop of Sydney in 1983 and was elevated to the Sacred College of
Cardinals by Pope John Paul II in 1988.

He was previously Archbishop of Canberra/Goulburn in 1979 and has been the foundation
chancellor of the Australian Catholic University since 1992.
